Scalar curvature and minimal hypersurface singularities

General Relativity, Geometry and Analysis: beyond the first 100 years after Einstein

This will be a lecture on the effect of the possible presence of singularities in volume minimizing hypersurfaces on the proofs of the positive mass theorem and related results concerning manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature. We will explain why many of the results can be proven in the presence of singularities.
