Abstract
Moments of L-functions have been important in number theory and are well-motivated by many arithmetic applications. The main goal of this talk is to illustrate, through analogies and concrete examples, how one can use period integrals to study moments. We will discuss why periods are useful in revealing the interesting underlying structures of moments — some of which can be modeled by the theory of multiple Dirichlet series and the random matrix theory.
